After its first edition in 2018, the post-Covid edition of Ch[a]rita became the field where various artistic and participative ‘renderings’ of the action-research carried out since 2019 by QANAT (LE 18) and the Ateliers Collectifs (Dar Bellarj) came to play, by activating symbolic (and material) processes of grass-root appropriation of Marrakech’s identit(ies) and spaces. Furthermore, Ch[a]rita / السيس continued inviting artists to develop proposals directed to interrogate and reinvent, pin down and explore the making of collective memories and the forms of knowledge production and transmission, as well as the present and future imaginaries of their cities.
While setting its headquarters at Dar Bellarj, the programme invested spatial contexts in which 'contemporary' art and performative practices normally do not occur. As lines are drawn forming new squares, as channels are dug creating new (underground) networks, the programme unfolded through an agenda that invested many Marrakech neighbourhoods, often through the complicity of cultural spaces located therein.
In 20-21, Ch[a]rita / السيس extended beyond Marrakech to resonate through and interconnect with other territories, first in Morocco and, particularly through the partnership with Mahattat Radio in the digital and ethereal space.
Furthermore, shortly after the festival in Marrakech, waters flew and seeds were exchanged from and through the responding programmes Makhazin, curated by QANAT and hosted at Rotterdam Zuid - NL (Het Gemaal cultural center) and Nissan Byihyi al-Insan, conceived by Shayma Nader & Francesca Masoero and speaking from Ramallah - PL (Om Sliman Community Farm).
This edition was curated by Nouha Ben Yebdri, Francesca Masoero & Rim Mejdi, and held collaboratively by LE 18 and Dar Bellarj Foundation, in dialogue with Mahal Art Space, through their respective platforms QANAT, Ateliers Collectfs, and Pedagogies Invisibles.
